Piazza del Campo is the central landmark of Siena. It is a wide, oval-shaped square surrounded by shops and outdoor cafes. The square is named after the bell tower, il Campo, (below) which has 400 steps high (we know, we climbed them.).

In the summer, the famous Palio horse race is run around the outer edge of the square.
