Miles and miles

I wore myself out last week, riding 6 days straight, totalling nearly 140 miles. I was so tired I took three days off in a row. But I still managed to get in 101 miles: 16 on Thursday, 18 on Friday, and my longest ever 67 miles on Sunday. The shorter second day of my PMC route is only 68 miles, so I'm getting there.

My fundraising total is now up to $1580. Thanks to everyone who has contributed! There's still time to make a donation to sponsor my ride.

Back on schedule

For a good part of May, it was difficult to keep up with my training schedule. We had the coldest May on record and it rained a lot, plus I've been pretty busy. But this week I finally caught up again, riding nearly 140 miles this week, including a 63 mile ride this past Sunday. I was tired and sore after the long ride, but I'm feeling pretty good about my progress. I'm healthy and have a little less than 2 months to go. I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks to everyone who has sponsored my ride with donations. I've raised $1480 of my $2500 goal. Please give generously if you haven't already. Donations can be made online, or by mail.

An introduction...

For those who don't know (I've told a few people already), I've met someone special recently. Her name is Nneka and we met a few weeks ago. Things are going great so far. We have a lot of common interests and have fun together.

My brother, Matt, who was in town for a U2 concert, is the first of my family and friends to meet her. We all had a good time last Sunday hanging out for brunch, a long walk, and eventually for dinner. I'll keep this posting short, but if you're interested I can tell you more. I also have a couple of photos. Just email me.

June sun

The weather seems finally to have broken (crossing my fingers!). We got some great weather this week and it looks to be the best weekend in over a month. I've finally gotten back in the swing with 73 miles of riding this week. I had only ridden one day of the past eight -- eek! I need to build up my long rides quickly before the PMC in August.

Bright and early this morning (Saturday) at 8 AM, I went for clinic on paceline riding (through Wellness Works, Inc.). I learned that you can ride as much as 30% faster in paceline, which is a line of cyclists riding very close together to benefit from technique called drafting (read more about drafting here). It's a little dangerous so you have to be wary, but it's a lot of fun. I also learned an important tip to make better use of my strongest muscles on upstrokes, gluteus maximus and hamstrings.

I met some other PMC riders and the ride route took us through very beatiful (and historic) parts of Lexington, Concord, and, when my group got a little lost (), Billerica. I had a blast, and I think I'm going to try some more group rides with a group called the Charles River Wheelmen.
