Spring has sprung...
We had our best spring days yet, yesterday and today. Yesterday it was very sunny and got up nearly to 60F, and today it was in the mid-50s and sunny. I got in three rides during this week for a total of 44 miles. And I wore shorts for the first time this season. Yippee!
I may not get much riding in this weekend, however: it's supposed be quite a bad rain storm tomorrow and Saturday. Oh, well. You know what they say about April showers...

Emergency cycle repairs
It was a beatiful day today for riding -- sunny and in the 40s -- so I went out for a long ride. It was a 32 mile ride and on the way home, I was getting pretty tired, but I was enjoying the ride.
Then it happened -- I experienced my first equipment failure since I bought my bike last spring -- the front derailleur cable broke! Well, it didn't completely break, but it was well on it's way: frayed at the connection point to the derailleur, which would no longer shift higher than the second gear. I was worried the cable would completely break and I be stuck with only the lowest front gear, and would be stuck riding at a snail's pace all the way home.
Luckily, I thought to myself, I have my handy-dandy bike map, upon which are marked the locations of many bicycle shops. I stopped and looked at the map, and found one relatively close -- less than a mile. I tried calling, but I got a fax machine(!). Well, maybe they changed their number. I would later learn they were no longer at that location, but fortunately, a friendly fellow cyclist stopped to help when he saw my map, and informed me that there was another cycle shop about a mile ahead, and gave me the name.
By now it was getting late, and I worried the shop might be closed when I arrived. I was right, they were closed, but only just barely. The employees were still there and thankfully let me in when I told them of my dilemma. They repaired it quickly and then recommended I also get my brake pads replaced soon. I paid them and thanked them very much for helping me.
It was getting dark and pretty cold by the time I got home. My feet and hands were freezing, but I made it. Thanks again to the guys at Quad Cycles in Arlington, MA!

Spring is here at last
Sunday was the official start of spring, and the weather was very spring-like in Boston -- sunny and mid-40s. I went cycling both days for a total of 29 miles. It was my first riding in the two weeks since I got sick, so I was a little tired, but I had fun riding without a jacket.

Happy St. Patrick's Day -- er, free burrito day?
I went to the local wrap/burrito place on Wednesday for dinner, where the told me to save my receipt because I was entitled to a free burrito on St. Patrick's Day. Ok, a little weird, but I'll take "free" any day of the year...

Today was a nice sunny afternoon, so I took my camera out to the area around Harvard and took some pictures. Hope you like them.

Out of commission
I've been sick in bed for much of last three days, with 103F fever, congestion and coughing. I'm feeling much better today, but still not great. I went into the office only so I could turn in an HR form that was due today, then I went home again.
To make things even more fun if I feel up to going to work tomorrow, it rained for much of the day and now it's turned to snow, which means the highway will be a skating rink tomorrow. My apartment windows are whistling and rattling in the wind.

Snow... again
With today's report at Logan Airport of 8.5 inches, Boston has had 78.1 inches of snow this winter, nearly double the average for a season (according to a WHDH report). And there are no signs of it letting up. We're supposed to get more next week. Boo!
It's still shy of the snowiest winter on record, however. In 1995-96 Boston got pummeled with 107.6 inches. Well, I'm tired of shoveling snow in any case. It took me about 45 minutes to dig my car out this morning. Thank goodness for the exercise room at my new office -- I was able to continue my PMC training, albiet on a stationary bicycle.
