I've started posting entries from my honeymoon journal, with links to photos. Check it out.

My office moved...

My company's office moved this week from Newton, MA, to Lexington, MA. The difference in commute isn't much different for me, although it's quite different for a number of people in the office (better for some, worse for others).

It will definitely take some getting used to: learning where the best lunch places are, etc. One immediate benefit for me -- the 10-mile Minuteman Bikeway comes within a block from the office -- yippee! . There's also a free exercise room and showers available, and a cafeteria in our complex. One complaint I have is the noisy air vent above my cubicle. Oh, well, I'll get used to it.

Presidents Day blues

I must be bored because I'm about to tell you about the sandwich I ate today. It was a good sandwich, though! It was good enough to give it a name (or maybe that's me being bored again). I call it the Blue Turkey Club -- deli sliced turkey breast, tomato, bacon, and blue cheese -- all heated in the oven for about 15 minutes until the cheese melts a little and the bread is toasted. Mmmm!

Boring? Well, this is what happens when I get a totally random company holiday in the middle of February. The 5 or so inches of snow today didn't help either. Oh, well.

Great weather, lots of riding this week

It was in the 50's the last couple days so I took full advantage. Riding without a jacket for the first time in months was wonderful! This makes five days straight for a total of 58 miles! I also beat my best speed today for my regular 8-mile course (involving two fairly steep hills) near my office -- averaging 15.5 mph. Woo-hoo! (Yes, I do realize that the PMC is not a race, but I like riding fast .)

Sunny day for a ride...

Got in another ride this weekend. 23 miles this time. It was sunny and cold -- right around freezing. That makes 42 miles this week -- my best week of riding since the cold weather set in. And looks like I might get in a couple of days this week. Gotta take 'em when I can get 'em!

Got in a short ride before dark

I rode 11 miles today. It was mostly sunny late this afternoon, but still pretty chilly -- 37 F. The best news, though: the bike path along the Charles River was clear! (Well, except for a small section where the plowed the grass instead of the pavement. It was easier to ride on the packed ice and snow than in the mud there.) For the most part, it was smooth riding the whole time.

I'm going to try for a longer ride tomorrow...

Holiday photos now available, plus improved navigation

I finally got my Christmas and New Year's photos up on my web site. I also added a menu at the top of each page and a photo album index so it's easier to find photos now. Let me know what you think!

Hopeful for weekend riding weather

It's looking better and better for a weekend ride. The forecast "winter storm" we're supposed to get tomorrow has turned into "1 to 3 inches" predicted in Boston. Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be 35 degrees, and Sunny on Sunday. Excellent!

Looks like more snow...

There's a Winter Storm Watch in effect for southern New England tomorrow (Wednesday) night. Looks like we may get up to a foot. Ho, hum. It may be tough to ride this weekend and next week. Again.

My brother Matt went home today

I can't believe it's been a month already! My brother Matt came to visit me for all of January. He left to go back to Minnesota today. We really enjoyed spending time together. We played music together (we both play guitar and sing), visited lots of great parts of Boston, went out to eat at my favorite restaurants, visited our relatives in MA, and tossed back many a beer and/or coffee together.

I'll miss hanging out with him. He'll be back in May, though -- we bought tickets to a U2 show in Boston!

Have a safe and pleasant flight, Matt!

Rode 31 miles today

To kickstart my training for the PMC, I rode my longest ride since last fall -- 31 miles, from Boston to Lexington. I turned around at the office park where my company will be moving to at the end of this month. It happens to be a block away from the Minute Man Bikeway! I plan to begin commuting by bike a few times a week after we move.

I also got my first pledge yesterday from my friends Grant and Mel -- thanks guys!

Registered to ride in the Pan-Mass. Challenge

I am now officially registered at the Pan-Mass. Challenge web site. You can view my profile, along with my fundraising goals. You can make donations and pledges there. I encourage anyone to give generously to this worthy cause. As August draws nearer you'll be able to see how much I've raised, etc. I plan to begin sending requests for donations in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your support.

Geoff

Slow start training for the Pan-Mass Challenge

I intended to do a little cycling in January to prepare for my entry in the Pan-Mass. Challenge. Unfortunately, the cold and snow conspired against me. I've managed to get in only about four rides this month.

I did ride this Sunday and was planning to try for today and tomorrow since the weather was going to be sunny and warmer, but alas, the door to the bike room at my apartment building is blocked by ice that formed when some of the snow on the roof melted this weekend. I'm told it will be cleared by tomorrow. Another obstacle is the fact that many of the bike paths are not yet plowed.

I'm hopeful that February will be a better month for training, but we'll see...
